Digitized music can be stored in a wide variety of different formats. Among their other differences, the individual formats provide different audio quality, and different degrees of compression and flexibility. PTS-AudioCD MP3-StudioAudioCD MP3 Studio 2000 uses the WAV and MP3 (MPEG1 Layer 3) formats because they are commonly used on Windows systems and offer good quality combined with a high level of compression. The compressed WAV format supported by AudioCD MP3 Studio 2000 reduces wave files to around one quarter (1:4) of their original size without audible quality deterioration. The MP3 format provides much higher compression but it is slightly "lossy" -- this means that some of the original data is lost when the music is compressed. This is the trade-off for the high compression, which makes it possible to transfer music files via the Internet.
